Benzyl Benzoate USP
Benzyl Benzoate is an ester of benzoic acid and benzyl alcohol. It is a clear, viscous liquid at room temperature with a sweet balsamic odor. It is present in certain essential oils and fragrant substances, like jasmine, ylang-ylang, and Balsam of Peru.
Benzyl Benzoate is used in the perfume industry as an aroma fixator / fixative (to help the perfume to last longer and prevent the scent from evaporating too quickly) and is also present in cosmetic creams. It improves the stability and odor characteristics of the main ingredients. A wide variety of personal care products contain this ingredient, including aftershave lotion, shampoo/conditioner, cleanser, perfume, moisturizer, suntan lotion and nail polish.
It is also used in formulations for scabies or lice treatment and also a repellent for chiggers, ticks, and mosquitoes.
According to IFRA (International Fragrance Association) restrictions, you can use up to 4.8% (of total mix) for fragrance formulations (Cat 4). However, we recommend usage up to 10% to avoid altering your fragrance end-product formulation. Usage level for a fragrance fixative is 5 - 10% on the weight of the fragrance.
The freezing point of BENZYL BENZOATE USP is 18 - 21 °C (64 - 70 °F). It will begin to liquefy at 18 °C (64°F). Product is not affected by cycling between freezing and thawing conditions. It can be left at room temperature or in a controlled-temperature water bath or a hot box set to 50°C (122°F) to thaw. Gently stir or tumble the container to ensure it is homogenous.
It is recommended to use the minimum amount of heat necessary to thaw the product. It is also advised not to perform direct heating to higher temperatures.
